Joan Didion says that keeping a notebook is important because it allows us to stay on nodding terms with the people we used to be. With Back Talk, I was 23, nodding to my 17 year old self. But even more than that, I was talking back. Saying, Hey sister! I can’t believe you said that! But I remember how you came to believe all those things and how, at that point, could you have known any better? But let’s not get into all that—let’s party! Now I am Big World girl back in your small town. I’m home! Open the sunroof—let’s ride!
